In Memoriam: Andrew “Gene” Mills

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Andrew “Gene” Mills, a cherished member of the Bichon Frise community and a pillar of the Bichon Frise Club of San Diego. Gene’s dedication to the breed and his unwavering commitment to the club have left an indelible mark on all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

A Lifelong Passion for Bichon Frises

Gene’s journey with Bichon Frises began in 1973 when he and his beloved wife, Mary Ellen, welcomed their first Bichon, Nelly, into their lives. This initial companionship sparked a deep-seated passion that led to the establishment of the internationally acclaimed Drewlaine Bichons Frises kennel. Together, Gene and Mary Ellen dedicated themselves to breeding and raising Bichons that exemplified the highest standards of the breed.

Contributions to Canine Literature

Recognizing a need for comprehensive resources for new Bichon owners, Gene and Mary Ellen co-authored “A New Owner’s Guide to Bichons Frises,” published in 1997. This guide offers invaluable insights into the breed’s history, characteristics, grooming needs, training techniques, and health considerations. Their collaborative work has been instrumental in educating countless Bichon enthusiasts and ensuring the well-being of the breed.

Leadership in the Bichon Frise Club of San Diego

Gene’s leadership within the Bichon Frise Club of San Diego was both influential and inspiring. Serving as a director, he played a pivotal role in organizing events, supporting club initiatives, and fostering a sense of community among members. His efforts were instrumental in the club’s growth and its reputation as a leading organization dedicated to the Bichon Frise breed.

Commitment to Dog Shows and Judging

Beyond his roles in breeding and club leadership, Gene was a respected figure in the dog show circuit. As an American Kennel Club (AKC) judge, he officiated numerous events, bringing his extensive knowledge and fair judgment to the ring. His presence was notable at events such as the Bahia Sur Kennel Club of Chula Vista, where he served as the Best in Show judge.

Honoring the Legacy of Mary Ellen Mills

Gene’s journey was intertwined with that of his wife, Mary Ellen, who preceded him in passing. Together, they formed a partnership rooted in mutual respect and a shared passion for Bichon Frises. Their collaborative efforts in breeding, writing, and club activities have left an enduring legacy that continues to influence the Bichon community.

A Lasting Impact on the Bichon Community

Gene’s influence extended beyond organizational roles and publications. He was a mentor to many, offering guidance to new breeders and owners, and always ready to share his wealth of knowledge. His approachable demeanor and genuine love for Bichon Frises made him a beloved figure among peers and newcomers alike.

Celebrating Gene’s Life and Contributions

As we remember Gene, we celebrate a life dedicated to the betterment of the Bichon Frise breed. His contributions have shaped the community, and his legacy will continue to inspire future generations of Bichon enthusiasts. The Bichon Frise Club of San Diego honors his memory and extends heartfelt condolences to all who were touched by his remarkable life.

Gene’s passing is a profound loss to the Bichon Frise community, but his spirit and contributions will forever remain a guiding light for all who share his passion.

It is with deep sorrow that we remember the life and legacy of Linda Rowe, who passed away on November 22, 2024, at the age of 83. Linda, a longtime resident of Oceanside, California, was not only an exceptional teacher and advocate but also a true pioneer in supporting individuals with hearing loss. Her journey through life was shaped by her own experiences with hearing loss, and she dedicated her career to helping others navigate similar challenges.

Born on June 22, 1941, Linda's early life was immersed in the reality of hearing loss. Raised in a family where hearing impairments were prevalent, she grew up acutely aware of the challenges that those with hearing loss face. Her mother had lost much of her hearing due to severe infections, while her uncle experienced significant hearing loss as a result of his service in a heavy artillery unit during World War II. Linda’s grandparents also dealt with the age-related hearing loss known as presbycusis. These experiences not only shaped her personal perspective but also sparked a lifelong commitment to understanding and addressing hearing loss in all its forms.

Linda’s professional journey led her to become a dedicated teacher of the deaf, where she used her knowledge and compassion to guide students through their own struggles with hearing loss. As a Deaf Teacher, she was a beacon of support and encouragement, helping countless individuals overcome obstacles and thrive in their educational and personal lives.

Her understanding of hearing loss extended far beyond the classroom. Throughout her life, Linda worked with a variety of individuals who struggled with different types of hearing impairments. She became known for her empathy and advocacy, often going above and beyond to ensure that those around her had the resources and support they needed. She was particularly attentive to the needs of people with hearing loss, always advocating for better communication and accessibility in various aspects of life.

Linda's advocacy also extended to helping others understand the complexities of hearing loss and how to communicate effectively with those who experience it. She developed strategies for improving communication with individuals who had hearing impairments, including slowing down speech, facing the person directly, and even using humor to bridge any communication gaps. She understood that hearing loss could be isolating, and she worked tirelessly to ensure that people with hearing impairments felt heard and understood.

Her work had a profound impact on countless lives, and her legacy will live on through the many people she mentored, taught, and inspired. Linda’s warm heart, generous spirit, and unwavering dedication to helping others have left an indelible mark on everyone who knew her.

Linda’s love for animals, especially Bichon Frises, was another important part of her life. She was a devoted advocate for the Bichon Frise breed, serving as the President of the Bichon Frise Club of San Diego and the Bichon Frise Club of America. Through her involvement with these organizations, she supported the betterment of the breed and worked tirelessly to ensure that Bichon Frises received the care and attention they deserved. Her contributions to the breed will not be forgotten, and her love for these animals reflected the kindness and compassion she brought into all areas of her life.

As we reflect on Linda’s life, we remember her not only for her work as a teacher and advocate but also for the kindness, warmth, and laughter she brought into the lives of those who were fortunate enough to know her. Her legacy is one of service, compassion, and dedication—a legacy that will continue to inspire future generations.

Linda Rowe will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Her contributions to the Deaf community, the Bichon Frise community, and the many lives she touched throughout her career will never be forgotten. We offer our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and everyone whose life she impacted. May she rest in peace, knowing that her work and her love for others will continue to resonate for years to come.
